We undertake a select number of residential projects, guiding each from initial concept through architectural design and interior completion. By overseeing every stage of the process, we create homes of lasting beauty that are cohesive, deeply personal, and thoughtfully tailored to the people who live in them.
About Carmel
Carmel Greer founded District Design after earning her Master of Architecture from Yale University in 2010. Over the next decade, she led the practice in designing a diverse portfolio of residential, multifamily, and commercial projects. Her work has been featured in Elle Decor, Garden & Gun, House Beautiful, and other national publications.
Following a pandemic-era move to Charlottesville, Carmel stepped away from architectural practice to devote herself to restoring and operating a farm and vineyard. That experience reinforced her appreciation for craftsmanship, stewardship of the land, and the enduring value of places that mature gracefully over time.
Returning to her first passion, Carmel founded Carmel Greer Architecture & Interior Design.
In addition to her professional practice, Carmel has taught architectural design at George Washington University, the Corcoran College of Art + Design, and served as a Teaching Fellow at Yale University's School of Architecture.
Carmel earned her Master of Architecture from Yale University and holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with a second major in Art History from the University of Virginia.
Philosophy
Our practice is founded on a simple principle: respect.
Respect for tradition.
Before drawing the first line, we begin by studying homes of the past. We believe history offers an unparalleled education in beauty, proportion, and permanence. While contemporary architectural culture often celebrates novelty for its own sake, our ambition is different. We are not interested in reinventing timeless principles—we are interested in understanding them deeply and applying them with care. Our goal is not to replicate the past, but to create homes that feel as though they have always belonged.
Respect for our clients.
A home is one of the most personal investments a family will ever make. We believe every client deserves to be understood and valued. Communicating honestly and approaching every decision with humility are the cornerstones of our practice.
Respect for craftsmanship.
Designing a beautiful home is only half the work; bringing it to life requires skill, care, and focus. We have immense respect for the artisans, builders, and tradespeople who bring our work to life. The finest homes are the result of genuine partnership between builders and the design team.
